Tiles with 5 % for edge cuts. Main tees run the long way at 4 ft on center, with a hanger wire every 4 ft of main, as ASTM C636 sets.

The grid is a 4-foot module and everything hangs off it. Main tees run the length of the room at 4 feet on centre; 4-foot cross tees span between them every 2 feet, which makes 2 × 4 cells; a 2 × 2 ceiling adds a 2-foot cross tee down the middle of each cell. Wall angle goes round the perimeter and carries the cut edge tiles. The counts above are those rules applied to the room, with the mains on whole 4-foot bays and the border taken up by cut tiles at the walls, which is how a ceiling is laid out so the border cuts match.

Hanger wires are a standard, not a habit. ASTM C636/C636M, the installation standard for suspended ceiling grid, has hangers along the main tees at not more than 4 feet on centre, with a hanger within 8 inches of the wall at each end. The count here is one wire per 4 feet of main run; a room with light fixtures or diffusers needs the extra wires those items call for, which the standard also requires and the count cannot know about.

Mains come in 12-foot lengths, tees in 4 and 2, angle in 10 or 12. The stick counts are the run lengths over those, rounded up. Mains splice end to end, so a 20-foot run is one 12 and one 8 cut from a second 12 — the offcut may serve the next run. Order by the stick count and expect a few offcuts, not by the run length and expect to be short.

What I check on a job

Check the ceiling plan, not the floor. I hold these counts against the reflected ceiling plan, not the floor plan. The page runs the mains the long way and lets the border fall at the walls; on a real ceiling the light layout usually decides where the grid starts, which can flip the direction of the mains. Then I take the fixtures off the tile count, even if I picked the 10% option for lights: that covers cutting around them, not the cells they fill. A lay-in light or a diffuser displaces the tiles in its cells, which is one tile only when the fixture matches the tile size. The wire count I treat as a floor. It assumes clear structure above every 4 feet of main, and above most ceilings a duct, a pipe or a beam sits where a wire wants to drop, so wires move and get added. Last, I measure both diagonals: in an out-of-square room the border tiles at opposite walls come out different widths, however carefully the grid is centered.

Tiles = ceil(area ÷ tile area) × (1 + waste). Main runs = floor(width ÷ 4 ft), each the room length; 4 ft cross tees = main runs × floor(length ÷ 2 ft); 2 ft cross tees (2 × 2 only) = main runs × floor(length ÷ 2 ft). Wall angle = perimeter. Hanger wires = one per 4 ft of main tee, per ASTM C636/C636M §2.3 (hangers at not more than 4 ft o.c. along mains). Stick lengths: mains 12 ft, wall angle 10 ft.

Worked example

A 20 × 16 ft room with a 2 × 4 drop ceiling: tiles, grid and wires?

  1. 320 ft² ÷ 8 = 40 tiles, 42 with 5% for the border cuts.
  2. Mains at 4 ft across 16 ft: 4 runs × 20 ft = 80 ft, seven 12-ft sticks. 4-ft cross tees every 2 ft: 4 × 10 = 40.
  3. Wall angle 72 ft (eight 10-ft sticks); hanger wires one per 4 ft of main, per ASTM C636: 20.

42 tiles, 7 mains, 40 cross tees, 8 sticks of wall angle and 20 hanger wires — plus the extra hangers any light fixture needs, which the count cannot know about.

Questions

How far apart are hanger wires on a drop ceiling?

Not more than 4 feet on centre along the main tees under ASTM C636, with a hanger within 8 inches of each wall. Light fixtures need their own.

How many 2 × 4 tiles for a 20 × 16 ft room?

40 to cover 320 ft², 42 with 5% for the border cuts.

How many main tee sticks does a 20 ft run take?

Two: mains come in 12 ft lengths and splice end to end, so a 20 ft run is one 12 and an 8 cut from a second 12, whose offcut may serve the next run. Order by the stick count, not by the run length.

What does a 2 × 2 ceiling add to the grid?

A 2 ft cross tee down the middle of each 2 × 4 cell. The mains stay at 4 ft on centre and the 4 ft cross tees every 2 ft, and the hanger wires stay at one per 4 ft of main tee under ASTM C636.
